The Achilles tendon is a large tendon that connects the calf muscle to the heel. The tendon is important because it points the foot down when it flexes—a critical movement for walking, running, and jumping. Achilles tendonitis is a common injury in which the tendon becomes irritated and inflamed. There are two types of Achilles tendonitis:

1. Insertional. At the heal.

2. Noninsertional. In the middle of the tendon.

Symptoms & Causes

Achilles tendonitis symptoms include:

• Pain when pointing the foot down
• Tendon thickening

Achilles tendonitis causes include:

• A bone spur
• Calf tightness
• Overuse
• Suddenly increasing physical activity intensity or frequency

Common Treatments:

After a thorough evaluation, a CONA hip specialist may recommend:

• Activity modification
• At-home stretching and strengthening exercises
• Immobilization in a cast, splint or boot
• Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications
• Orthotics
• Physical therapy
• Rest, ice, compression, elevation (RICE)
• Shoe modifications, insoles

A cortisone injection may be offered for fast-acting pain relief.

Diagnosis:

• Carefully listens to the patient’s symptoms
• Obtains a complete medical history, including previous injuries
• Performs an Achilles tendon physical examination

An x-ray may be ordered if a bone spur is suspected.
