Tendon Transfer Surgery Overview
A tendon transfer surgery removes an unhealthy hand tendon and replaces it with a new one. Patients can move their hand without any problems after recovery and pain and other symptoms dramatically decrease.
How is tendon transfer surgery performed?
A tendon transfer is performed as an outpatient procedure. General anesthesia is used to make sure the patient is completely asleep and can feel no pain or discomfort. A Carolina Orthopaedics and Neurosurgical Associates (CONA) hand specialist removes the unhealthy tendon and replaces it with a harvested tendon. The hand is placed in a custom made splint so the tendon does not stretch and tear.
What does a tendon transfer surgery treat?
There are many tendons that help move the hand. Common reasons why a tendon may not work properly include:
