Meniscus Tear Overview
The meniscus is a piece of soft cartilage that protects the knee bones from rubbing. A meniscus tear is a common injury that makes it difficult to move the knee without pain. Symptoms & Causes
Meniscus tear symptoms include:
- A clicking sensation when the knee bends
- Decreased range of motion
- Knee instability
- Pain
- Stiffness
- Swelling
- Tenderness
Common meniscus tear causes include:
- Osteoarthritis
- Running and jumping sports
Common Treatments:
Nonsurgical treatment options treat some meniscus tears. After a thorough evaluation, a CONA shoulder specialist may recommend:
- A brace or assistive device
- Activity modification
- Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications
- Physical therapy
- Injections
Minimally invasive surgery may be recommended to treat severe meniscus tears that do not respond to nonsurgical treatment.
Diagnosis:
A CONA specialist listens carefully as the patient describes how their injury occurred and what symptoms they have experienced. A complete physical examination of the knee is performed. X-rays and an MRI are ordered and analyzed and an accurate diagnosis is made.
